Outlaw Star

Outlaw star is an anime about a bounty hunter who teams up with an ancient ship and goes out to destroy a group of evil space pirates.

The bounty hunter, Gene Starwind, teams up with Jim Hawkins, Aiysha Clan-clan, Melfina, and Starlight Sazuka.  The group quest across the stars in search of nothing in particular, but get stuck with the responsibility of saving the world from a group of evil pirates.  Along the way, Gene is forced to fight against his archrivals, the McDougal brothers.

The anime premiered on Cartoon Network in the year of 2000-2001.  Although I liked watching the anime the first time around, I much preferred Cowboy Bebop over Outlaw Star.  OS has a much worse story and doesn't develop the backgrounds of the main characters.
